Refinements to the interior of the 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII come on the heels of last year's redesign of this luxury sport coupe. Carpeting is upgraded and a cassette deck replaces a CD player as standard equipment with the JBL Audio System. Two optional CD systems are offered: a single-play dash-mounted system in place of the cassette deck or a 10-disc trunk-mounted changer.
The Mark VIII's optional cellular phone will be equipped with a longer life nickel metal hydride battery for extended out-of-car use.
Lincoln Mark VIII last year introduced several significant changes: A 48-inch neon tube across the rear of the Mark VIII improves both the visibility and the reaction time of the center high-mounted brake lamp. The warning given to traffic approaching from the rear is a significant 0.20 seconds quicker than what's possible with conventional incandescent brake lamps. The chance of a rear-end collision is reduced because the extra reaction time gives drivers 17.4 feet more stopping room at 60 mph.
The Mark VIII's outside mirrors combine a host of functions in one attractive design. They advise drivers at the rear of a turning maneuver by means of a string of red LEDs across their lower edge. And they're electrochromic, automatically adjusting to compensate for bright headlamps on cars that are following. The driver's-side mirror also automatically tilts down for an optimum view of the curb as soon as the transmission is shifted to reverse.
Inside, and ergonomically designed instrument panel provides a handy message center where the driver can select personalization settings for 10 functions and set key reminders such as the time remaining before the next oil change.
A new cellular phone introduced with the 1997 Mark VIII is portable and allows hands-free use in the car or remote operation outside the car.
